Saturday Matinee | no. 3

High Noon | One hour until noon, one hour to prepare, one hour...and then they're coming for him.  Starring Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and some of the best character actors in the business.
One of my absolute favorite westerns ever, even though Grace Kelly's character drives me nuts for about half of the film.  I mean, what's wrong with you, woman?! You should be backing your man up 100%!!  Good grief!!!  *end rant*  But she comes around in the end.  So yes, all in all one of my favorite westerns.

Harvey | What would you think if a man walked up to you and said, "Hello, I'm Elwood P. Dowd, and this is my friend, Harvey."  Only, there's no one with him.  What would you think?  Ahuh...that's just what everyone else thinks, too.  But stick around for a while, you may be in for a surprise.
Jimmy Stewart.  End of story.  Seriously, one of the funniest, screwiest, and happiest films ever.

TV-PG
Star Trek: Voyager |  Space...the final frontier.  Only this time, we're not on the Enterprise.  We're on the USS Voyager, on a mission to track down a ship of rebel Maquis.  But somehow, we've been pulled far from Federation space to the far side of the galaxy, more that 70,000 light-years from Earth.  And it's going to take us 75 years of traveling through space to get back home.
Follow Captain Kathryn Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok, Tom Paris, B'Elanna Torres, Neelix, Kes, the Doctor (not The Doctor;), Harry Kim, Seven-of-Nine, and the rest as they encounter strange sights and civilizations on their long journey home.
This is a 7 season series, each season representing a year...and just how they managed to get home in 7 years rather than 75, you'll have to discover for yourself. ;)  I just finished Season 4, and so far I'm loving this series!  Great characters and interesting plots.  Lots of excitement, aliens, and even some romance.   I'd say the TV-PG rating is fair - there is some of what I would call mature themes throughout, as well as some mild language.

Question: What did you watch this week?  I want to know!

  1. I love Harvey...it's one of my very favorite movies.(: I've been meaning to watch High Noon for some time--maybe I will now that you've given it such a good review! And I have really got to watch more Star Trek--I've only seen a couple of episodes, but I really liked what I saw! :D

  2. High Noon is good. (And it has Lee Van Cleef in a small role, his first, which this lover of Sergio Leone's westerns just has to note. Though Sergio Leone's westerns are definitely to be watched with a warning.) Have you seen the "reaction" film, Rio Bravo? It was a strange film: the whole time I was watching it, I thought it was rather boring, but then, when I thought back about it, it grew on me. Maybe a bit like my first time reading Pride and Prejudice... I could hardly get through the progression of the story, but I fell in love with the characters. High Noon is almost the exact opposite: you can't exactly fall in love with the characters, but you really, really want to know how it all works out in the end.

The Doctor, but not The Doctor: us poor Whovians now have to distinguish all the time. :D

  3. I need to watch Harvey! It sounds like a fun movie.

I've haven't seen Voyager, but I've seen all of TNG, most of TOS, and all of the movies. I'll have to give it a try sometime!

  4. The last movies I watched are: Black Coffee, Bernie, This Happy Breed and Genetic Roulette.
Genetic Roulette was a really good documentary about GMOs.
This Happy Breed is a English film.
    Bernie was, well... Interesting.
    Black Coffee is self explanatory.

  5. High Noon is a such a great film! Gary Cooper was perfect in that role and I absolutely agree with you about Grace Kelly's character... she just needed a good talking to - and possibly a shake - to show her the error of her ways.

I so need to see Harvey. I'm a huge Jimmy Stewart fan and this movie has been on my "to watch" list for a very long time. You convinced me to move it to the top. :-)

My sewing and crocheting screen time this week was consumed by "Once Upon A Time". It's a good thing that I had lots of projects going, because I got totally sucked in and watched the entire first season. :-)

  6. The last film I watched was Charade:) We just finished it. "Oh, Adam-Alex-Peter-Brian... I love you!"
The last before that was How to Steal a Million. 'Cause we're soooo classy. ;D

    Talk to you soon!

  7. I have always loved Voyager. It was the only Star Trek I actually got into. :)

  8. Oh, Harvey! Ooh-hah! Funny movie--barring that one bit of "unfortunate" dialog in the middle.
Lots of quotables in that one. And yeah...Jimmy Stewart was perfect as Elwood.

We've been going through all the Star Trek series this past year or so (all but what my dad called "Booby-prise," that is). Having grown up with Star Trek, it's been interesting re-watching the series as an adult. On the downside, there's some *adult* content that went over my nine- and ten-year-old head--eep! Thankfully not so much as to be obscene--just unfortunate that the writers thought they had to put it in there. And there are certain (but very few) episodes we don't even watch. On the positive side, I finally have a better grasp of why some things happened the way they did!

    God bless,

  9. *Choke* Voyager? Erm.... *Cough* I like the Original Star Treks with Captain Kirk but the other newer ones annoy me. I really don't like Voyager much. I felt they didn't do enough with Tom Paris ( the only character I liked - Balona gets good at about s6 but I still like Tom better) And I thought the Final was TERRIBLE. I think I was spoiled by Kirk's crew who had terrible plots but better character chemistry. *Sigh* Oh well. Voyager is OK, It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

    I TAGGED YOU !!!!!!!

  10. Vicki - Yes, you need to watch High Noon! And more Star Trek is always good;D

Hana-Marmota - YES!! Someone else who is familiar with Lee Van Cleef! I mostly know him from his roles in the TV series The Rifleman. My family really enjoys him as a bad guy:)
I have seen a film called Rio Bravo, but I don't know if it's the same one.
Haha - yep, always have to clarify which doctor I'm talking about;)

Sereina - It is a fun movie!
I haven't seen any of TNG, but I've seen most of season 1 of TOS. We're on season 2 now. I'm enjoying it very much!

Kimberly - Sounds like some good movies and documentaries there!

Tayler - Gary Cooper was fantastic!! A shake...or possibly a good spanking! At least she came around in the end.
Yep, you need to watch Harvey:)
Okay, I need to watch Once Upon A Time. It looks so good from what I've seen and heard.

Kellie - Two of the best films EVER!!! :D

Lisa - I love how the characters interact with each other, not to mention the unusual situation they're in. Good series:)

Tom - lol. My dad and mom both grew-up watching the Original Series, so we're enjoying going through that together. Sometimes, it gets a bit corny, but I've always loved a certain amount of corniness. ;)
Yes, there are a few episodes of Voyager I skipped, but for the most part, I love it:) Which season are you on?

Bella - I enjoy the original series, too. But I still like Voyager best. Oh, I'm quite in love with Tom! ;) Hmm, well, I think the chemistry between the characters was excellent. I've really come to care about each of them as individuals. But hey, we're all allowed to dislike certain TV shows if we want to:)
    Thanks for the tag!

  11. Lee Van Cleef makes a very, very bad bad guy in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and a very good rather good guy in For A Few Dollars More (and both are meant as a praise, just to make things clear). But, as I said, watch with caution...

  12. Ha. You got me seriously watching Voyager (I'm now in the 4th series, too). And I love them all. Every time a character's on, I'm thinking they're my favourite, and then someone else comes into the centre of attention, and I'm thinking they're my favourite. :P (Though I may be a teeny tiny bit more partial to Chakotay than the others. He's got the markings of my sort of hero. No, I'm not talking about that tattoo. :D)
I actually like very much that they have such a vast main cast (as opposed to the original with its three main heroes) and no one really being the main protagonist. While it was confusing at first, it makes much more sense in the long run.

  13. Hana-Marmota - Hooray!! You're enjoying Voyager! That makes me happy:) I know! I love all of the characters so much, and they all got a chance for great character development. Chakotay is pretty awesome, that's for sure. Very sweet and considerate, but strong, too. My personal favorite is Tom Paris. I guess I've always had a weakness for the slightly rebellious and scoundrel-ish "heroes" who must prove themselves. The Doctor (not :The: Doctor;)is a favorite, too. I love his sarcasm.
I love the large cast, too! You never really get bored with any of the characters.
Oh, I'm so happy you're enjoying the show:)
